James Main

Chef James Main happily brings his culinary training and 20+ years in the industry to your kitchen. James has spent the past 12 years working in busy DC-area restaurants, catering parties and teaching cooking classes on the side. But his passion for culinary arts really shines when cooking for friends and family—and that’s how Main Course Personal Chef Service got started.

James learned his love of food and cooking from his family. Living in Boston and Cape Cod while getting his culinary arts degree at Newbury College sent him on the quest to create the perfect New England clam chowder. James explores new foods wherever his travels take him, taking back fresh flavor combinations to use in his unique blends of herbs and spices, infused olive oils, vinegars, sauces and marinades.

James is no stranger to the DC area restaurant scene. He worked at Bistro Bistro when he first moved here in 1997 and was the sous chef at Café Saint-Ex during its early years, leaving to become the head chef at IOTA Club & Café in Clarendon. He’s recently joined the Mid Atlantic BBQ Association to learn more about the joys of grilling, smoking, and barbeque. James is certified in food safety management and fully insured. As a premier member of the United States Personal Chef Association, James is currently working toward his Personal Chef certification.

James lives in Arlington with his wife and daughter. When he’s not in the kitchen, James can often be found indulging in his other passion—playing percussion in his band, Brother Shamus.
